January 1st. A new year. A fresh start. We come to a new year with high hopes. It feels so great, like you’re getting a second chance. We all do it. Then the year goes by and after some initial activity, we’re back to where we were last year.
It was a couple weeks before Christmas when I decided to relaunch this blog. I said to myself that I’ll redesign it and it should be ready for launch on January 1st. It was ready before the end of the week, but why did I wait until January? A habit, I guess, and a bad one at that.
It is totally unnecessary to wait until the calendar flips over to make changes. So, why do we wait? Because we are lazy. It is OK, to tell yourself, the diet can start a day later, or a week later. And before you know it, it’s December again. If you are serious about something, why wait until a specific date to start? Why not start the moment the idea pops into your head? If you want to accomplish something, don’t wait. Start now!
So, why do we need New Year’s resolutions?
Why do we need to repeatedly make promises we won’t keep? The answer is simple, but we refuse to acknowledge it. We do it to make us feel better, to clear our guilty consciences. At least for a while. It feels good, doesn’t it?
With this in my mind, I was trying to think of a different New Year’s resolution I could make. But, after some brainstorming, I was even more confused. Then I came up with an idea…
This year I decided to NOT make a New Year’s resolution. Or, did I just make one?
