Do You Swear on Your Blog?

March 8, 2010 in Blogging | View Comments

Do you ever drop an F-bomb on your blog? Sometimes it’s called for, sometimes it’s just inappropriate, and for some people it’s just a natural way to express themselves. It’s for you to decide how you want to express yourself. You will probably want to decide what type of audience you want to have before you decide to drop an F-bomb on your blog. Profanity may be funny but only to certain readers. I guess it’s how you use it.

As you have probably noticed, I don’t swear on my blog (I don’t remember doing it anyway). I want to keep my blog open to the widest audience I can. But then again, I don’t swear in real life either. I think if you’re writing  some sort of a business blog, then you probably should be more careful. But for a personal blog I think it’s fine, if that’s how you want to express yourself. But you may find that you will lose some readership if you do.

Personally, to me it’s not the biggest turn off to read a blog that uses some swearing as long as it’s not done too often. Don’t get me wrong. I think swearing isn’t something that I like to hear, or see in this case, but the occasional one in context to make a point doesn’t bother me.

Do you swear on your blog? Does it bother you if others do it? I’m looking forward to see your opinions.

I swear a lot on my Blog, but i don't write it as me, i write it as more a frustrated character which is why i think it works, what do you think?
  • It depends on your inclusion of swear words. I headlined a blog post with "fuck" once -- in memory of George Carlin. More recently, I wrote "bullshit" but it was passive as part of a sentence.
  • No I do not sear on my blog. Nice article buddy.:)
  • I totally agree with you - and yes, it does bother me when others use profanity on their blogs. I'd like some type of warning - let me know if what I'm about to read is rated -R before I start reading.
  • P.S. Unless the word crap is profanity, I don't use profanity offline either.
  • I swear all the time in real life. But not on my blog.

I teach a wide range of Snowboard students, adults and kids. I want to be able to refer any of them to my blog for advice. I want to keep it professional.

The person that marries swearing and professionalism is Naomi Dunford from Ittybiz. She just doesn't care what anyone thinks and she writes as she talks. She comes across as very real in her copy as a result.

I think it depends upon what audience you want to appeal to and your subject matter.
  • Me neither. I'm not a 'swearing' person on and offline. I don't exactly mind to be on blogs that swear a couple of times but I can't really control if one is to swear a lot, right? :) At least I learned not to judge their characters from that. Whether a page is alright for me to visit, depends on the networking we've had. But of course, to keep a site decent, would be ideal for my personal preference.

    Thanks Marko. :)

Hahaha, I have seen some really terrible swearing in posts of some people, but no, I do not swear on my blog, and I really try not to swear at all. however, being human, when I get angry, I do swear, and then lots of times because of my pc, but I have a 3 year old little boy, he is like a sponge, so if we let a word slip, we can just bet on it he will remember it at the wrong time, and we can do without that embarrassment. But on my blog I use no bad language, specially coz a lot of ladies read my posts, and i find it tasteless and bad manners when a man swears in front of a lady.

Great question, great site you have, and thanks for following my twitter. Please visit my blog, and tell me what you think. I am open to suggestions as I am not quite sure where I wanna go from here.

    Have a great day!

    Colin.
  • There is no credibility in swearing on a blog. In my opinion it can really hurt the way people look at you and your entire brand. Some people use swearing to attract attention - I always say a good post attracts a lot more attention than a person that can shoot-out a good swear.
  • I agree with you on this one.

It all comes down to whether it fits the overall writing style or not, in my opinion.
Random swearing does nothing for me, but a few bloggers just have a certain style where a good old rant including some swearing just fits.

It's not a big deal to me, either way, however.
I don't swear a lot on my blog(s). No F-bombs so far, but I don't have a "clean language only" policy either.
  • If I had read Tom's comment before I left my response, I wouldn't have left my response. That's it in a nutshell.
  • What do you consider "real life" - I really can't say if it bothers me to hear/read the choice words of others. It's not what goes into a man that defiles him....I prefer to use words to edify and if I feel the need to express myself deeply, then I find a suitable word. Profanity is too easy.
  • "Profanity is too easy." - excellent point.
  • I just had this dilemma today...kinda. A past client sent in an awesome testimonial for me to use on my site, but he did swear in it.

The reason I left it in, is because it adds to strength and power to his statement.

So I think there is a time and a place, you just need to make sure you aren't offending your audience.
  • I cuss in real life, but I usually substitute "frelling" for f*ck on the blog. I do this because sometimes usage of the word is warranted, however, frelling just sounds a lot more classier.
  • I do all the time, but usually lesser words than F**k and B**ch. A** is usually fine. Nice picture btw ;)
  • No, I don't swear on my blog and I don't swear off my blog as well. I don't mind it on other blogs as long as it not a f-bomb and if it is not gratuitous.

Unfortunately, I cannot RT this Marko because of your image. Sorry!
  • Agree with Kevin. Under no circumstances. I want to be taken seriously ...except for when I'm funny...

BTW: Marko, worried to follow you on Twitter now due to this image. I will unfollow anyone who sends that word onto my Rated PG page.

    How's that for a reaction?
  • I appreciate your opinion. You're free to follow whomever you want. :)
  • Thanks for your comment. That's the point of this post to see the reactions, no problem if you can't rt ;)
  • I don't swear on my blog because I don't swear at all. When I read swearing on a blog especially if it on a regular basis I find it very off putting.

By not swearing you open yourself up to a much larger audience, but since it is their blog, everyone is entitled to do things their own way.
  • Thanks for the comment Tom. Yea, I agree - not swearing opens you up to wider audience.
