Do You DoFollow?

February 3, 2010 in Blogging | View Comments

If you’re unfamiliar with dofollow, let me first clarify what dofollow and nofollow attributes are.

What is DoFollow?

Dofollow is simply an internet slang term given to web pages or sites that are not utilizing nofollow. Nofollow is a hyperlink inclusion that tells search engines not to pass on any credibility or influence to an outbound link. Incoming links to your blog with a nofollow attribute are not as good for the SEO of your blog as normal dofollow links and will not help increasing your Google Page Rank either.

Wordpress blogs by default have nofollow attribute added to links in the comments.

Why are Blog Comments NoFollow by Default?

Because Google said so. Well kind of. Here is the Official Google Blog post regarding comment spam from 2005, when they introduced nofollow. Basically they made this to prevent spammers to increase their search engine rankings.

Why go DoFollow?

Blogs that use dofollow attributes may attract more comments, because people like to build backlinks. And face it, every blogger wants comments on his blog. Don’t you? There is a downside of it, tho’. Dofollow blog will also attract more spammers trying to increase the number of backlinks to their blog.

If there are any other benefits for a blog owner to go dofollow please let me know in the comments.

How to make your Wordpress blog DoFollow?

If you’re using Wordpress, then it’s a matter of a few clicks. Simply install a Dofollow Plugin. In the menu Plugins, click on Add New, then search for dofollow, click Install.

My blog comments at the moment are not dofollow, because Disqus comment system has nofollow tags in comments, but everything has its trade offs, I guess.

I do, howerver, use a Top Commentators plugin which rewards top commenters with a dofollow link in the sidebar. And I have it set to reset once a year.

So – do you DoFollow? What are your thoughts about dofollow blogs?

  • Hi there, I've noticed that this post is half a year old, so I want to ask any of you, if there is "dofollow" solution for Disqus?

I really like this system, but also I want dofollow for the comments!

    Thanks!
  • Thank you for commenting in my blog which led me to yours and this post. As anyone who knows me is aware, I encourage bloggers to join the DoFollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv community and any that do are invited to make sure I know about them so I can raise their exposure and send them traffic.
  • I will let you know. :) Thanks for stopping by
  • I switched my blog to dofollow months ago and when I first switched it, I started receiving many comments (spam alike), and I've deleted a lot of them. It didn't change my mind to move back to nofollow, I don't care about that as long as I moderate every comment left on my blog, and I like to give my commentator link love as a reward for them.

    Regards,
    Lee
  • I've received 9 spam a like comments today and they were automatically approved by Disqus. Had to delete them later. Looks like you get spam comments either way.
  • I haven't gone dofollow yet and I have not decided if I will, but I have installed Commentluv.
  • You know me, I've been Do Follow for a long time now thanks to big John over at Pot Politics, I don't see myself going No Follow anytime soon. All though now it takes 3 comments before the Do Follow is active, the spam was beating down the door.
  • I like the idea to have 3 comments before they are dofollow. At least it makes the commenter read a bit more of your blog if nothing else. :)
  • I'm using Do Follow on my 2 new blogs, but I moderate my comments. I'm lucky that I don't get too many controversial comments. Thanks for the conversation about this.
  • On my blog I've installed lucia's linky love that removes the no follow tag after 3 approved comments by a commentator. So technically it is do follow for genuine, regular commentators.
  • Are using Dofollow blogs to get backlinks to your blog considered a no-no among search engines?
  • No. Nothing wrong with that.
  • I'd never heard of this until this post. So much to learn . . .

I don't delete any comments, unless it's spam though. I agree with Hal, all comments (except spam) give publicity.
  • I use Disquis too. Some things about it are good, some are not good at all. I don't and won't use dofollow because of bad comments. If you get many comments sooner or later someone will strongly disagree, or argue. I don't delete a comment unless it is really bad, profane etc. Disagreement can be a good thing - it generates more comments. Some people just don't know how to agree to disagree in a polite way.
  • Same here. And disagreeing comments do indeed generate more comments.
  • Tom
I went do-follow on my blog when I launched it the beginning of this year because I wanted to give my visitors added incentive to leave a comment.
  • I went dofollow on two of my blogs this past month. I use a different plugin called NoFollow Case by Case simply because it makes it easier, more intuitive for users to make a particular link nofollow. What's easier for my clients gets my vote. :) But the DoFollow is a perfectly good plugin.

Dixqus really needs to get on board!
  • I also you No Follow Case by Case. I like having more control over the site's comments and this plugin fills thats job admirably.
  • This plugin seems pretty cool. :)
