As you have probably noticed, I’m using a third-party comment system on my blog. Disqus (pronounced discuss) is a universal comment system for many blogging platforms. You probably want to know why I decided to use it on mine.
How it Works
Once you install Disqus, it takes over your commenting system. That means when you click on “Comments” in your blog’s admin panel, it will take you to Disqus settings screen, which is basically Disqus website opened up as a frame inside your blog. You could as well just go to disqus.com and log in from there. First thing you have to do, is import the comments from your blog to Disqus. Now, don’t freak out. The comments will remain in your database and all new comments will store in your database as well as in Disqus’ database. So, if you ever decide to stop using Disqus, you’ll be fine.
Benefits
Provides threaded comments, if your blog theme doesn’t.
Increases social interaction between blog commenters.
Visitors can log in and comment using Facebook, Twitter or Open ID.
Which means comments will appear on their Facebook wall, increasing promotion of the blog.
You can see on what other blogs people are posting comments, which helps finding people with similar interests.
You can edit and reply to comments for multiple blogs directly from Disqus website.
You can add moderators for comments without giving access to your actual blog.
