5 Blog Writing Tips

January 15, 2010 in Blogging | View Comments

One of the most important parts of a blog is the writing. Many beginner bloggers (and even some experienced bloggers) have trouble knowing what to write and how to write it for a blog. In this post I will list 5 tips that can help you in blog writing.

  1. Write in short paragraphs – Text heavy blog posts are hard to read while posts with more white space are easier to skim and more likely to keep readers on the blog.
  2. Less is more – Never use a long word where a short one will do. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
  3. Make your posts scannable – Every few paragraphs insert a sub heading. Make sentences and headlines short. Consider bulleted lists as these are easier to skim than sentences.
  4. Use keywords and catchy headlines – Think about what keywords people would use to search for your post and include them in the post and headlines. Make sure the keyword placement is natural and does not seem out of place. Contain whole argument in the headline.
  5. Edit your post – Important part of good blog writing is editing. Before hitting the publish button re-read your post and cut out the stuff you don’t need.

There’s a lot more to say about the subject, but this should be enough for a start.

  • Hi Marko, I like these tips. I have question about #4, I'm not sure what you mean by " Contain whole argument in the headline".
    @Ileane
  • Let me give you an example:
    Title 1: There was a car accident.
    Title 2: Car accident in London caused by a drunk man killed 2 people
    Title 2 contains whole argument and gives the reader a better idea about the article.
    Maybe not the best example, but I just woke up and couldn't come up with something better. :)

    Great Points! Too many words and people will get scared and run away. Use of bold text and subheadings help people to scan the post better.

    I like number 5. I know I get excited sometimes to just hit publish, but I hold myself back a bit to re-read and re-read the post just to make sure it sounds ok. But even then I find things later on. Oh well I'm not perfect
  • I like how your post follows all 5 of your rules :-) One thing I've found that helps me, and relates to your 5th point: before publishing, read the post out loud.
  • Reading out loud seems like a good idea, too. :)
